Situated at the cultural crossroads of the Americas, is one of the largest performing arts centers anywhere. Miami Performing Arts Center (MPAC) includes three state-of-the-art theaters, an education center, an expansive outdoor plaza, and a 1929 Art Deco tower of historical and architectural significance that will symbolically link the city’s past with its future.
The 2,400-seat Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House and the 2,200-seat Carnival Concert Hall is Miami venues for the Concert Association of Florida, Florida Grand Opera, Miami City Ballet, and New World Symphony, as well as premier venues for a wide array of local, national, and international performances ranging from Broadway musicals and visiting classical artists to world and urban music, Latin concerts, and popular entertainment from many cultures. The Studio Theater, a flexible black-box space designed for up to 200 seats, is host to intimate performances of contemporary theater, dance, music, cabaret, and other entertainment. The Peacock Education Center will act as a catalyst for arts education and enrichment programs for children and adults. Finally, the Plaza for the Arts is a magnificent setting for outdoor entertainment, social celebrations, and informal community gatherings.
Miami Performing Arts Center is designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli of Cesar Pelli & Associates. The design team included acoustician Russell Johnson of ARTEC, Inc. and theater planning and lighting consultants Jules Fisher and Joshua Dachs of Fisher Dachs & Associates.
MPAC provides adaptable rental spaces for corporate events and private celebrations.
MPAC is the largest public/private-sector partnership ever undertaken by Miami-Dade County . The total project expense is $412 million.
MPAC is vital to Miami ’s evolution as a major international capital. Likewise, it is the centerpiece of the city’s developing media and entertainment district, which is revitalizing the downtown area with the twin economic engines of arts and culture.
As the largest project within the Miami-Dade Empowerment Zone, the Center will contribute to the financial strength of the area through its construction, operations, programs and services, ancillary spending, an increased tax base, and long-term development of commercial, retail and residential real estate around the complex.
Strategically located on Biscayne Boulevard between N.E. 13 th and 14 th Streets, the Center will occupy 570,000 square feet on 5.9 acres of land donated by Knight Ridder and Sears, Roebuck and Co. It will be ideally situated as a major destination for residents and visitors and easily accessible by public transportation and major highways.
Construction began in October 2001 after the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved the contract with Performing Arts Center Builders (PACB), a partnership of Odebrecht Construction, Inc., the Haskell Company, and Ellis Don Corporation.
